Try Polynesian Food For Your Luau

Submitted By: Rene Thompson

Polynesia is home to a dynamic island culture. Perhaps best known for a culture incorporating tiki gods, Polynesia is also known for great food! if you’re thinking of hosting a luau or a tropical party, one of the most important steps of your party planning process is to seek out Polynesian recipes. While many of these mirror similar dishes found in Hawaiian cuisine, others are unique to the native Polynesians, or blend a wide array of culinary traditions, including those found in Hawaii, Asia, and even the mainland U.S.
When most people think of Polynesian food, they think of dishes featuring chicken, poi, and/or pineapple. These are certainly a few staple ingredients found at most Polynesian meals. Traditionally the Polynesian diet also features taro root and sweet potatoes, as well as rice and beans. Hawaiian baked beans, one staple dish, often comprise a large part of both Hawaiian and Polynesian fare.
For sweet recipes, the Polynesian diet often incorporates banana and coconut, like many other tropical islands. Both of these crops are traditionally grown on the Polynesian islands, and using them as ingredients for your luau menu will certainly provide an added flavor of authenticity.
Of all of these traditional Polynesian ingredients, taro root and poi are the two that are typically unfamiliar to American audiences. Taro root is the root of a tuber plant, related to yams and potatoes. Considered a staple in many cultures of Africa, Oceania, and Asia, it has a texture similar to that of a sweet potato, with a flavor like that of a potato. In the U.S., it can be found at most supermarkets carrying a large selection of Asian foods. Poi is made from the taro plant, which is cooked and then mashed into a pudding-like consistency.
Although these two ingredients are not typically found in dishes created in the mainland U.S., most of the other ingredients needed for Polynesian recipes can easily be found in any grocery store. Who says that you must be in Hawaii to experience a luau, or Polynesia to experience a delicious Polynesian feast? You can cook easy Polynesian-inspired dishes in your own home, using ingredients you're already familiar with.
For the most part, Polynesian food is traditionally cooked in an earthen oven. For your own Polynesian party, this means plenty of baked dishes, though of course you can use your regular oven as an alternative to the traditional earthen oven.
Often, the key to creating the perfect menu for a luau or tiki-themed party lies in authentic Polynesian fare that's familiar enough to please mainland palates. This was certainly true in the tiki lounges that sprang up in the 1930s, tiki bars during the tiki craze of the 50's and 60's, and in today's restaurants around the world that feature Polynesian-inspired menus.
For the main course, look towards sweet and sour sauce for something that's a bit familiar to most mainland tastebuds, yet also quite exotic and tropical. Most people are familiar with this sauce from Chinese restaurants. Recipes for Polynesian sweet and sour sauce typically require sugar and white vinegar, and are used to coat pork, chicken, or shrimp. As an alternative to sweet and sour, use soy sauce to coat the meat. Fried rice is another great dish that is certainly Polynesian, yet also familiar to those on the mainland.

 Submitted By: Elizabeth Chastain

Cake decorating ideas are easy to come by thanks to the Internet. However, too much of a good thing can quickly put you on overload. The best thing to do is simplify and go with easy cake decorating options. Here's a few ideas to consider:
ICING CAKES - To make it easier to ice your cake, thin out the icing, so it will spread smoothly. You can thin it with 3-4 tablespoons of corn syrup.
FONDANT COVERED CAKES - If you're looking for a way to create a "perfect" cake without blemish, then you'll want to consider a fondant covering. This wonderful creation eliminates all possibility of crumbs in the frosting and hides any lumps or bubbles in the cake.
EASY FONDANT BOW - A bow made out of fondant is a great and easy way to add instant pizzaz to your cake. A fondant bow on top of a square cake is a perfect choice for a tea party. Roll the fondant out to 1/8" inch thickness. Cut 1" wide strips. Depending upon the size of your cake, cut pieces to create two ribbon loops, two ties to hang down, and one piece to loop around the center of the bow and conceal all the ends.
FONDANT ROSES - These are super easy to make and are perfect for just about any cake that you might be making. All you have to do is roll out your fondant to 1/8" thickness and cut into strips. Depending upon the size you want your rose to be, you might consider making the strips 2" by 6". Fold the fondant in half lengthwise and roll it up. Once rolled, cut off the excess. Cluster three roses together on top of your cake.
SUGAR FLOWERS - For an instant floral decoration, add pre-made sugar flowers to your cake. They come in a variety of colors and all you have to do is dream up your floral design and start laying them down.
SHAPED CAKE PANS - Match a cake pan to your party theme and decorate it according to the pan's instructions. There are over 225 pans available that come in various shapes and sizes.
DECORATED CUPCAKES - Bring your cake decorating down to a manageable scale by opting for cupcakes. All you have to do is frost them and decorate them with cupcake picks.
If you want to be a little more creative, you could create the look of a bouquet by arranging tiny sugar flowers on top and pipe out green stems from the flowers.
Another yummy and easy option is to cover your cupcakes with chocolate frosting and then top them off with chocolate curls.
Frost your cupcakes to look like various sports balls. For example, a cupcake frosted white with a curved red line on either side becomes a baseball. Frost one orange and pipe out black lines and it becomes a basketball.
BOTTOM LINE: Baking can be a fun and rewarding experience and it's a great way to express your artistic and culinary talents, while providing yummy confectionary treats. Get your creative juices flowing and make it easy on yourself by implementing some of these basic cake decorating ideas.

Foods to Help You Enhance Your Memory

Submitted By: Sharon Campbell

Are you struggling with some memory lapses nowadays? Have you been forgetting a lot of things lately? Your brain must be having an all-time low then. Have you been feeding it well? Or better yet, what have you been feeding your brain?
Your brain needs energy, an enormous amount of energy. The brain is the biggest energy hog in the body. You have to remember that the brain controls all the functions in the body. It is the one that sends signals to each part of the body on how to move. Therefore, it needs all the energy it can get to be able to function well.
But there really are times when that our brain needs a boost for it to work well. Here are some foods that can help with the brain function and enhance it power when it comes to memorization and remembering.
Of course, what can top the list but coffee? Coffee is rich in anti-oxidants and can give you a boost when you need it. This is because of the caffeine content of the coffee. A cup of coffee will give your short-term memory a fix. It can help improve attention and problem-solving skills. A cup of coffee is enough to get this momentary high. Do not overdo it though, as caffeine can tamper with your sleeping schedule.
For a long-term memory enhancement, eating blueberries is the best way to do it. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants that protect the brain from free-radical damage. The antioxidants can cut the risk of you having Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Have blueberries everyday and make it part of your diet. They are known to improve cognitive processing or thinking. If you can find wild blueberries then that is much better than the ordinary blueberries as these have more brain-boosting antioxidants than the latter. But if you cannot find any fresh blueberries available, frozen ones will serve as substitute. The frozen ones have kept all the vitamins and minerals intact and are much more nutritious than the available ones that did not ripen in season.
Salmons and mackerels are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are the primary blocks of the tissues in the brain and will boost one's thinking powers. These fats can only be found in fatty fishes so if you cannot find salmon or mackerel, any fatty fish will do. But remember that not all fats are equal so do not make the mistake of eating high-fat foods. Some high-fat foods contain saturated fats which are not good for the body and can clog up the blood vessels. So instead of getting the nutrients you need, you will never get them at all.
And for an improved concentration, drink peppermint tea. The scent can help you focus and keeps your mind alert. Studies show that peppermint makes people more alert and less anxious.
But nothing can beat a good night's rest. Your brain needs to rest, too. If the brain is constantly tired, it will not function effectively and efficiently. A well-rested brain is the best brain there could ever be.
